The Cost of False Assumptions and Lost Opportunities
Haven’t you ever reacted to a bit of information with, “Hmmm? That’s just the opposite of what I thought would happen!” It makes you challenge your assumptions, doesn’t it?
I experienced that when three of your Board members and I attended the AMA Regional Mid-Year Retreat in Austin. It’s a day when chapter leaders from the region get together to, “ReConnect, ReFocus, ReEnergize” in order to finish our Board term with a bang. Due to all the sharing, we come home with great ideas that are working for other chapters, but it also reinforces how outstanding our own DFW chapter is when we’re continually asked how we do things so successfully!
My ‘challenge’ moment came when I heard that, in spite of this economic downturn, the Austin chapter actually has had a substantial increase in its membership numbers! Of course I wondered why their number of members was up while ours had not gone down, but only remained steady. And their explanation was so simple – it’s because of the economy, stupid!
It goes back to the basic premise of pricing – is the value received worth the cost? I often hear from non-members that they would love to join, but just can’t afford it now because they’re out of work, their company won’t pay for it, etc. – and I’ve understandingly accepted their premise because I’ve been in their painful shoes (pay dues vs. buy groceries?). But now my question is, “Are you sure you can afford NOT to be a member?”
Can you really measure the cost of a lost opportunity? An opportunity to learn a new technique that will help you do your job better (and keep it!)…a strategy that will win you that new client who makes the difference in keeping your business open…a new connection who will prove to be a valuable friend and ally?
This “Duh!” moment forced me to realize that we haven’t done a very good job of marketing the benefits, and therefore value, of a membership. Members receive benefits at two levels – from the national AMA and locally. The AMA is an ever-increasing treasure trove of resources, and we even have members from out of the area who join just to receive the publications and have access to these resources:
· Bi-weekly Marketing News – filled with the latest trends and best practices
· Quarterly in-depth publications
· Annual member directory
· Frequent webcasts and radio programs
· White papers, research studies, and much more on marketingpower.com
· Internet Special Interest Groups
· Professional development events around the country each month
Locally, in addition to the discounted event pricing for chapter members (usually 40%), we offer events almost every week for professional development and networking. At the local level you have the opportunity to develop new skills and connections through volunteering.
But we want to offer even more value for your dollar, so we’re ‘upping the ante’ and bringing more members-only benefits:
· Watch for special offers from Getty Images and the Dallas Business Journal.
· If you’re out of work, talk with Phillip Crum about his Job Assistance Package at Sir Speedy Printing (pcrum@SirSpeedyWalnutHill.com).
· Take advantage of the Members Helping Members Table at the monthly Executive Luncheons – bring your resume, company brochure, or job openings to put on the table for others to take.
· Attendees with job openings are identified at the monthly luncheons.
We’re working on developing more local member benefits, so if your company would like to participate in exchange for recognition, please contact me! And stay tuned for further developments…
As the button reads that D’ Forman wears, “I Refuse to Participate in the Recession!” You may have been struck a hard blow, but that doesn’t mean you have to be down for the count. By participating with our chapter, you’re taking control and doing something positive for yourself and your company. The time and money you spend with DFW AMA is an investment in your future, so don’t miss this opportunity!

What is a SIG and Why is it Important to Me?
By Tom Dennis, SVP Events and Programs
A SIG, or “Special Interest Group”, is what separates the DFW Chapter of the American Marketing Association from every other marketing organization in the Metroplex. Through our SIGs we are building communities of like-minded individuals that come together for programming that is focused on a specific market segment. We like to think that while our monthly Executive Luncheons show you “what” a company has done to launch a product, refocus their brand or even reinvent their company, the SIGs will tell you “how” they did it.
We started out with three SIGs in 2007 and currently have six: Branding & Strategy, Marketing Research, Mobile Marketing, Nonprofit, Small/Medium Business & Telecom/Technology. Our goal is to make sure we provide the programming that our membership needs to be successful in their jobs and we are open to adding other Special Interest Groups if there is enough interest. If you have a suggestion for a SIG we should add, or better yet would like to become the Director of a new SIG, please contact me. We also need several volunteers to fill out our SIG committees and help in making all this happen. So if you would like to get involved, let us know!
This is a big week for three of our Special Interest Groups – and a great opportunity for you to experience what a SIG is all about. First up is a special combined Telecom/Technology & Mobile Marketing SIG Luncheon. Our Telecom SIG Director, Martha Burns, along with her committee from Ascend Marketing, is bringing in Allen Kupetz, an internationally known author to speak on the topic of how technology will change both personal and business lives. This February 4th luncheon is not to be missed – even if you are not in the telecom or mobile marketing industries!
The second big event, on Friday of this week, is the second gathering of our new Small/Medium Business SIG. We are bringing in five marketing experts for a panel discussion titled “The Marketing Tool Kit – Thriving in 2009”. Throughout the morning you will receive in-depth information about marketing in a challenging environment and each speaker will have valuable tools that you can take away and start using immediately. We’ll start with breakfast @ 7:30 and will conclude around 10:30 - following a very interactive Q&A session.
As always, you can find more information about these and all our events at www.dfwama.com, or contact me at tom@brandextract.com
Looking Ahead to Beyond Borders
By Jeff Bond, SVP Beyond Borders
A beautiful spring morning has dawned with a light mist of dew on the grass next to the conference doors. In a moment this place will explode with activity, exhibitors setting up, presenters making final adjustments, and marketers from all over the Metroplex signing in with anticipation. It’s still quiet for now and I’m silently reflective and proud of the process and people that brought us to this moment – the moment before we officially kick off the DFW AMA’s Beyond Borders Global Marketing Summit.
2008 Beyond Borders was huge success for those that attended. This year, the premier global marketing event of this region is primed to rally American marketers and provide the thought leadership and resources to capture this global market in a challenging economy. Keynotes from Exxon Mobil, McKinsey and Company and Mary Kay will provide growth strategies and valuable expertise. In addition, this year attendees will gain a wealth of insights and knowledge from our presenting sponsors, GfK Custom Research North America, a leading global marketing research and consulting firm with offices in over 110 countries.
The U.S Department of Commerce, Motorola, Brinker, UTD, and the International Association of Business Communicators will all be in attendance April 15, eager to share their global marketing knowledge and network with other global professionals.
Exciting sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are available for those companies who wish to increase their exposure to this global audience. Please contact Kim Garlitz, VP Sponsorships, at 469-449-4273 or email Kim at kim.garlitz@gmail.com for sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities.
2009 will be challenging for marketers, but together at Beyond Borders Global Marketing Summit, April 15th, 2009, we can build stronger brands and marketing strategies.
