How can you make marketing even more relevant? Communications expert Merrie Spaeth recommends looking at every employee and every customer as a potential marketing partner.
Partner with Human Resources. With competition for customers at a reverent pitch it's critical that your organization is maximizing its marketing through internal as well as external resources.
Each one of your company's employees is a Brand Ambassador for the organization. How and what they talk about to their neighbors, friends and relatives influences your organization's Brand. Do you know what they're saying? Do you know what you want them to say?
If there's a gap, find out why. If your employees are enthusiastic about your organization, its mission and/or its products then you're maximizing your Brand Ambassadors and increasing your marketing power. If they aren't then the damage to your Brand is compounded because the information is perceived as coming from an inside source.
Few companies actually empower and motivate their employees to look for opportunities to carry the organization's message. Story telling is one of your best strategic assets - if your employees are repeating the stories. And the new channels of communication can leverage the power of a story.

AMA and DFW – A Winning Combination for Remaining Competitive!
Part of both AMA and our chapter’s mission is to educate marketing professionals, and I can honestly say that in my four years of membership, there have never been such dedicated efforts to meet members’ needs as I’ve seen the past few months. AMA’s going ‘all out’ specifically to address both corporate and individual challenges in this uncertain economy through the weekly enewsletter, Marketing News, the AMA journals, internet SIGs, radio broadcasts, webinars, www.marketingpower.com, and training workshops nationwide.
On a local level, we’re working to provide both educational opportunities through our programming, as well as helping you make the connections you need to further your career or business. There’s no dearth of resources available – all you have to do is take advantage of them! There are very few things that will deliver to you the professional benefits that your AMA membership does for under $20 a month!
Think you can’t afford your membership in these tough times? Think again – you can’t afford NOT to take advantage of everything AMA and your DFW chapter offer if you want to stay competitive! If you’re not a member yet, be sure to see Kay Altom’s article below regarding the Spring Membership Campaign incentives for new members – then Join!
Escape from depressing income taxes on April 15 and surround yourself with positive people and ideas! THE place to be for anyone engaged in or contemplating international marketing is at our 4th Annual Beyond Borders Global Marketing Summit! We’re bringing in top global marketers from around the world – India, Austria, Egypt, etc. – to share their insights and strategies for marketing in this economic revolution. See Jeff Bond’s article below for more details, then register by clicking on Beyond Borders at www.dfwama.com! Even if you’re not involved in global marketing, you’re sure to know someone who is – so please help us spread the word. This promises to be our best Beyond Borders ever!
And don’t forget to check our website calendar for our networking Meet n Greet and SIGs. Note there are NO Executive Luncheons in Dallas or Fort Worth in April because of the focus on Beyond Borders.
Have a great month taking advantage of everything your membership offers! See you out there…
DFW AMA Membership an Ounce of Prevention in a Sick Economy
Kay Altom, SVP Membership
I recently read an article about various memberships and the reasons why people maintain them through economic downturns. It was fascinating to read the following quote in regards to an individual keeping their health club membership:
‘For me, it is prevention,’ says Williams, 28, an engineering student at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. ‘A fitness club membership is cheaper than medical bills later.”
As simple as that statement is, it made me think of the DFW American Marketing Association membership and how appropriate that statement is to our members. Our membership is “prevention” – plain and simple. It is prevention from our members missing out on so many updates on marketing changes and news. It is prevention on losing touch with valuable connections and potential customers. And finally, it is prevention from our members missing the incredible educational programs.
So, what is prevention worth to you? If you break down our membership dues – as a member you pay less than $18.75/month or to break it down further, $2.72/day. Yes, you read correctly - $2.72 A DAY!
My request for you is to think of these numbers when you receive your renewal notice or opportunity to join and ask yourself, is giving up a cup of coffee a day worth the value I receive from the DFW American Marketing Association?
I believe it is…..and with our Membership Campaign starting April 10, there are additional incentives to JOIN NOW:
- AMA’s “for new members-only” webcast: Destination: Success. Taking control of Your Career in the New World of Work, featuring an expert panel versed in career trends.
- New members will get their $30 application fee waived (member and chapter fees still apply)
The timing couldn’t be better to put your prevention plan into place – simply click on Membership/Join at www.dfwama.com to start receiving the benefits!

Marketing in an Economic Revolution
Jeff Bonds, SVP Beyond Borders
To put the global economic crisis in perspective, consider that experts estimate:
· 6,500,000 to 8,100,000 U.S. homes went into foreclosure in 2008 – and 10,000,000 more homes will go back to the bank over the next 4 years!
· 1,700,000 to 2,000,000 jobs were lost in 2008 - and 3,000,000 more are expected in 2009!
· 17 Trillion dollars was lost in the top 50 stock markets around the world - or $2,535 for every man, woman, and child on Earth!
Every market on the globe lost money in 2008! Rounding out the top 5 worst markets are Russia, Ireland, Greece, Norway, Brazil, and China. The top 5 least hard-hit were Morocco, Japan, Switzerland, Israel, and surprisingly, the USA. I say surprisingly because if you listen to the news you’d think the U.S. leads the world in another great depression. How about some good news for a change?
The good news! Organizations such as the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of the American Marketing Association are taking action. On April 15th, 29 global marketing professionals from diverse industries will gather to share their experience and best practices to rally marketers in this economic revolution towards capturing or retaining a piece of the global market.
It’s uncertain if the U.S. will retain its dominating role in this rapidly changing global society. We’re all in this together, and we must learn from one another if the U.S. is going to continue to dominate the global market in the future. Many countries are implementing strategies to take our place as the global leader. What are you going to do about it? I think it’s best to first learn what you can do about it…and you’ll learn those possibilities at Beyond Borders Global Marketing Summit.
Exciting sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are still available for those companies who wish to increase their exposure to this global audience. Please contact Brandi at bloodworth.brandi@gmail.com for sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities.
2009 will be challenging for marketers and the world’s economies, but together we can build stronger brands and marketing strategies for future global growth. Don’t miss Beyond Borders Global Marketing Summit, April 15th, 2009, presented by GfK Custom Research North America!

D/FW American Marketing Association Supports the Salvation Army
Melissa Mihelich, EVP Media & Community Outreach
As part of our community outreach efforts, the D/FW AMA is very pleased to announce our partnership with the Salvation Army D/FW. Did you know...?
The Salvation Army’s national average is to use 83 cents of every dollar donated in direct services for people in need which is why they have been recognized as one of "the most efficient and effective organization in the U.S.”. Salvation Army services and programs include: social service programs for families, homeless men, women and children, substance rehab, senior citizen care, and youth programs for the poor. For more information visit: http://www.uss.salvationarmy.org/uss/www_uss_dallasac.nsf.
The need for food and funds in the D/FW Metroplex has skyrocketed; this is our call to action. We will be conducting a food drive at the upcoming Meet n Greet held on Thursday, May 7th, 2009. More information will be posted on the website soon.
This is one of many opportunities to come to pay it forward. Stay tuned for even more events and activities organized by the D/FW American Marketing Association that support the Salvation Army. Volunteer opportunities are available, contact: Cori Lawrence, SVP of Volunteers, 469-693-5314 or corilawrence@gmail.com or Melissa Mihelich, EVP Media & Community Outreach, 214.217-7700 or mmihelich@zoom7.com.
It’s time to get involved!
With Spring Comes New Growth
Tom Dennis, SVP Programs
As spring arrives we are once again expanding our program offering. In an effort to address topics of importance to our membership, and address the changing landscape in marketing, we are adding 2 new SIGs (Special Interest Group) – Professional Development and Multi-Cultural Marketing. First up is the new Professional Development SIG, which will be of great value to all our members, but is designed to specifically help those members that are currently in transition. This SIG will focus on topics that will help our members find the job of their dreams, such as how to write a great resume, how to network, and our first topic – the importance of perfecting your personal brand. Click here to find details on this April 28 luncheon on the DFW AMA website.
Following on the popularity of our Beyond Borders Conference, we are launching a SIG that will focus on Multi-Cultural Marketing topics throughout the year. Our inaugural meeting will be a joint event with the National Black MBA Association and will take place on the evening of May 5th on the campus of SMU. A panel of experts has been assembled to address the “Opportunities and Strategies for Marketing to Multi-Cultural Audiences”. It should be a great evening of enlightening information and conversation.
While we are off to great start with these two SIGs, we need your help to make them a success. We are building committees for these two new SIGs (as well as our other SIGs) and need volunteers. Please contact Cori Lawrence or me if you would like to join one of our SIG committees.
And don’t forget, we also have our second Non-Profit SIG luncheon taking place on April 24. Our Speaker will be Katrina McGhee the Vice President of Global Partnerships at Susan G Komen for the Cure. Click here to visit the DFW AMA website for details.
Hope to see you at an event soon!
